June is Internet Safety Month June marks Internet Safety Month, so it's a great time for people to assess their online safety.
Please read the article Protect Yourself Before You Connect for some tips to help you and your families stay safe whilst being online. Here are some interesting facts to set the tone for the month:
Number of internet users worldwide as of April 2024: 5.44 Billion
Number of social media users worldwide as of April 2024: 5.07 Billion
Daily time spent on social networking by internet users worldwide in 2024: 143 minutes
Most popular website worldwide as of November 2023, by total visits: Google.com 175 Billion
There is an average of 97 cybercrime victims per hour, this means there is a victim of cybercrime every 37 seconds.
A couple of smart ways to ensure you provide some protection to your accounts before you connect to the internet:
- Strong long passwords. Try making a password from a Passphrase. String a few random words together and add characters/symbols/numbers. You will be more likely to create a strong password due to the length (length is strength) and remember it rather than something like B97bn!%sZn!
- If MFA (Multi-Factor Authentication) is available is an option - enable it. It gives an extra layer of protection through more than one authentication method i.e. Password and Biometric
Remember: Passwords are like underwear. Change them regularly, don't leave them where people can see, and never share them!

Collaborative Problem Solving - Leveraging Team Power to Bring Great Ideas to Life
by William A Moylan, PhD, PMP, FESD, DTM Professor Emeritus, Eastern Michigan University
A Physicist, an Engineer, and a Political Scientist are stranded on a deserted island
A Physicist, an Engineer, and a Political Scientist are stranded on a deserted island and are all very hungry. They are delighted to find a large can of beans that has washed up on the beach. Having no way to open the can they try to find a way to the beans. The physicist states that if he puts the can on a fire it will heat up and explode the can allowing them to get to the beans. The political scientist says that will be way too messy for them. The engineer comes up with the idea that if he drops a large rock or coconut out of a tree, it will smash the can and allow them to get at the beans. The political scientist says again that this will be way too messy for them. Hearing this for a second time, the physicist and engineer ask the political scientist if he has any better ideas. To which he stands up and says "Assuming we have a can opener..."
